CASTLE TRAKOŠĆAN is a cultural monument, protected historical complex consisting of the castle, buildings by the castle, park and the park forest with a lake.
Castle Trakošćan was built in the 14th century and originally was a small medieval castle - burg. Often changed owners, until 1569 years, when it passes into the hands of Croatian noble family Drašković. Over time and with the weakening of the threat of war, castle lost its importance. In the 19th century, owners saved it from total downfall - With romantic redesign they converted castle into a residence. At the same time the surrounding area turned into a park, and created an artificial lake. After almost 400 year old continuous ownership, Draskovic family leaves the castle in 1944. In the year 1953 there is established Museum "Castle Trakošćan" that manages the whole complex - the state property.
The castle is now a museum, with a permanent exhibition, which is open to the public ambientally, in the original function. Trakoscan is one of the rare facilities in Croatia, with preserved its own archives, historically closely related to architectural framework and the life of its owners. Museum possesses a valuable museum holdings from the Renaissance to Historicism, made up of valuable collections of paintings, furniture, weapons and other items, which are constantly exposed in the original spatial units, which presents aristocratic life through the history of Trakoscan and of the Draskovic family.
Trakošćan is not only monument of architecture and museum, but also monument of nature and culture landscape. The area around the castle was designed as a landscape park - the large promenade which includes trails, roads, bridges, and other park facilities. All these elements form a harmonious horticultural ensemble.
